EPUCUYEN – Chilean Music
May 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Isabel Umanzor and Claudia Casal met in Santiago de Chile in 2010 and began their venture as a band in 2016 when they began playing together at parties and events. But it is in 2017 when they solidified as a band under EPUCUYEN, in their current city, Portland, OR.
EPUCUYEN’s name comes from Mapudungun, the native language of the Mapuche Indigenous People who inhabit the Araucania Region in Chile. EPUCUYEN is divided into EPU: ‘two’ and CUYEN: ‘Moon’, this is how EPUCUYEN comes to give life to two moons in their encounter in the universe.
Isabel, native from Santiago de Chile discovered her love for music at an early age. She started by playing with several folk groups participating in cultural events which were politically motivated in opposition to the Chilean military regime. Nowadays her songs can be found on CDs like “Siete dÍas”, “Dime” and now as EPUCUYEN’s Director, she is currently working a third album.
Claudia, native from Havana City, comes from a family of musicians and poets. Since she was a child she showed a vocation for art and poetry. She won second place in poetry at “Belvigraf Poetry International Awards” in Argentina, 2001. Her poem “Imposition to the Infidels” was included in the anthology poetry book “Like Every Thursday” launched by the University of Barcelona in the year 2009.
This event is free.
